Imperial Palace
Built upon the site of the former Edo Castle sits the Official residence of the Emperor of Japan, Japan's Monarch and Head of State. As one of the oldest monarchies which boasts an unbroken line of descendants back to Emperor Jimmu in 660BCE.
Though no longer viewed as a demigod in the post war era, the Emperor maintains an important status as a Symbol of the State and a symbol of the Unity of the Japanese people, As well as the Head of the Shinto religion. However to some in Japan he remains viewed upon as a descendant of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu.
