The southern most territories, encompassing all of the Ryukyu Islands in what we know today as Okinawa Prefecture, is the Ryukyu Kingdom. The Ryukyu people traditionally held long standing relations with both China and Japan and those influence can be seen in the culture that they developed. Ryukyu language is very much different from Japanese and during this time it would be very prevalent, even though some may speak Chinese or Japanese.
